What’s special: dumplings as an art form

At the “Münchner Knödelei”, run by landlords Florian and Bettina Oberndorfer, the managers of the “Wirtshaus in der Au”, it’s all about the round dumplings that were so loved by Princess Sissi and her siblings. In their second year at the Wiesn in 2003, the landlords proved that dumplings don’t always have to be round, with their square pretzel dumplings. Since then, the “Münchner Knödelei” has continued to come up with outstanding ideas and experimental creations, such as weisswurst dumplings, the “Knödel maker” song, the Munich dumpling, made of pretzel, roast pork and Paulaner beer, or the intriguing “beer lolly” (a dumpling-shaped lollipop).

In addition, in 2019 the Münchner Knödelei was honoured by the Bavarian State Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Forestry and the Bavarian Hotel and Restaurant Association as an "Excellent Bavarian Festival Tent".

The audience: diverse and familiar

The stall attracts a diverse audience of young and old, families and singles. The atmosphere is quiet during the day, but can get loud and lively in the evening.

The menu: from hearty and rustic to sweet and fruity

Whether it’s hearty and rustic dumplings with mushrooms and Alpine cheese from the Bavarian foothills of the Alps, or sweet and fruity dumplings with banana: here gourmets will discover the power of these delicious dough balls. The wide variety of dumplings served here are a true culinary delight and always surprisingly different.

Only here: dumplings inspired by Karl Valentin

In its first year at the Oktoberfest, the “Münchner Knödelei” offered a discount on its classic “dumpling trio” to all non-Bavarians on presentation of official ID. As per Karl Valentin’s dumpling-inspired play from 1940 (“Semmelnknödeln”), the discount was a third of the square root of the normal price. Since then, the Münchner Knödelei has kept on presenting humorous new creations inspired by the Munich native.

Only available here: Dumplings according to Karl Valentin

In the first year of its Wiesn presence, the ‘Münchner Knödelei’ granted all non-Bavarians confirmed by official document a special discount on its classic ‘Knödeltrio’. Based on Karl Valentin's 1940 stage play (‘Semmelnknödeln’), the discount was one third of the square root of the price. Since then, the Münchner Knödelei has continued to surprise with humorous offers in the style of the original Munchner.
