Travelling by public transport at Oktoberfest time - info & tips

At Oktoberfest time, the S-Bahn and U-Bahn, buses and trams run more frequently than usual, but of course it can sometimes be a bit of a squeeze. However, as the Theresienwiese is very centrally located, the distances are short. A special highlight: the stewards at Theresienwiese underground station, who ensure safety on the platform with a lot of humour and Bavarian charm (‘Geht's hoid viere, dann miasst's eich ned derbazn!’). The Theresienwiese station is naturally at its busiest during the Oktoberfest. If you are travelling with children, for example, it is better to use the Goetheplatz, Poccistraße or Schwanthalerhöhe underground stations. Practical: the free ‘MVG Fahrinfo München’ app, with which you can easily plan your journey by public transport in Munich.

    By underground to Theresienwiese

    • The U4 (green) and U5 (yellow) lines run directly from Odeonsplatz, Karlsplatz/Stachus or Hauptbahnhof to Theresienwiese station in just a few minutes. If it's too crowded there, you can also travel one stop further to Schwanthalerhöhe station.
    • The U3 (orange) and U6 (blue) lines run from Odeonsplatz, Marienplatz or Sendlinger Tor to Goetheplatz in around five minutes or, one stop further on, to Poccistraße. From here it is only a few minutes' walk to the eastern and southern entrances to the Oktoberfest.

    By S-Bahn to the Wiesn

    • The lines on the main line (S1 to S8) all go to Hackerbrücke: for example, two minutes from the main station, five minutes from Marienplatz and ten minutes if you get on at Ostbahnhof. From Hackerbrücke station, it's a leisurely 10-minute walk to the main entrance of the Oktoberfest. It's impossible to get lost, just follow the people in dirndls and lederhosen!
